Protests have taken place in Australia’s major cities after Friday’s announcement that all refugees arriving by boat will be resettled in Papua New Guinea.Under the controversial deal, Papua New Guinea would process and resettle claims in exchange for increased aid.Dubbed the ‘Pacific Solution III’ by some, the announcement marks a radical shift in policy for the Labour government ahead of elections later this year.Treatment of refugees and asylum seekers in a heated issue in Australia, with figures from major parties seeking to portray themselves as tough on immigration.In Adelaide on Sunday, Green party Senator for South Australia, Sarah Hanson-Young, criticised the policy.In the past week, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has further attempted to undermine support for the opposition by also announcing that the carbon tax will be scrapped.
